The Leffe Blond's my personal fave, although I am rather partial to Bellevue Kriek which is made from sour cherries. Some hairy chested blokes might think Kriek is girly beer. I don't. Try it with dessert ie chocolate. The framboise (made with sour raspberries) is equally good but not on tap.

The BBC (Belgian Beer Café NOT the British Broadcasting Corporation) also does nice Euro-style fare with Mussels, frites, tasting plates and other yummy stuff. As a guy married to a vegetarian I love being able to walk out of the supermarket with a bag of lentils, a bunch of fresh silverbeet and coriander, an onion and a couple of lemons and actually know what to do with it.

The beauty of this soup is it's simplicity and volume. We just keep the large pot in the fridge and decant to smaller pots or micro individual bowls of it for a very healthy meal.

French style lentils can be a nice substitute here as they hold their shape better but brown (or green) lentils will also do the trick.

You can also add firm tofu, or white fish or anything else that goes with these ingredients.van Riethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17838716268511223008noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1653453919925155264.post-78868117958173997052008-08-24T18:41:00.000-07:002008-08-25T02:38:25.048-07:00Mondo MarketsA few years ago my local butcher, Vince Garreffa started up a "mini market" behind his store in Inglewood.

As a former Adelaidean, I loved the market culture and missed the Adelaide Central Markets. As a musician, I wondered how I could help Vince keep the momentum of his outdoor produce market going.

Vince has created a brilliant little foodie hub in suburban Inglewood with live European folk music organized by yours truly.

When you get there, order yourself a coffee from Mena Samios, grab a croissant from Kingsley and Chrissie Sullivan and explore this little gem tucked behind the Mondo di Carne butcher shop. Make sure you try Suzanne Saldahna's famous coriander chutney. Karrimah's chilli kasundi is also yummo as are Helen's Hellish Olives. Of course you'll have to check out the recently renovated butcher shop out the front as well! I love the Mondo pies but you'll also find other produce like gourmet cheeses and marinated octopus. And the meat is of course truly incredible with many oven-ready options for those who love good food, but are pushed for time.

The markets are a great meeting place to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by. It's a really fun start to the weekend and kids seem to love the live music!

The Mondo markets with New Norcia bread, freshly brewed Essenza coffee, and live music start again in 2008 on Saturday September 6th (WA Election Day). We picked up a bottle at the Subi Hotel and marched towards Ecco where the wood fired pizza oven warmed our bodies and souls. We ordered grilled salsiccia (spicy Italian sausage), a potato and rosemary pizza on a creamy base and a napoletana with extra anchovies. Both the pizza bases we chose were with wholemeal flour. As we're chilli heads as well, we asked for some and were greeted with large containers of chilli in oil and dried chilli flakes. My wife's Italian and this was just like visiting her parents' place, in terms of the warm greeting we received from the staff and the expert cooking of Alberto, the pizza chef there. He, like all former residents of the Naples region cooks with passion and pride. He even brought us some delicious mandarins at the end of the meal to cleanse our chilli/red wine/ anchovy infused palates.

No fake ham toppings here! This place is GLORIOUS. There may be a wait due to popular demand, and the fact that good things take time. It's always going to be worth the wait.

Ecco
23 Rokeby Rd
Subiaco 6008 WA
Phone: (08) 9388 6710van Riethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17838716268511223008noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1653453919925155264.post-45566013710927440802007-05-14T19:57:00.000-07:002007-05-15T17:46:06.838-07:00BioBean Coffee<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CnrvgqGieZc/RkkiMf21aYI/AAAAAAAAABE/SHY2mhghb1A/s400/CFfront.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064616854060099970" />

BioBean Coffee

"Café Femenino, Dark Roast (Plunger or Espresso)
This coffee is a full-bodied roast from Peru, where the beans are grown and harvested by women." You might have to wait for a table though!

See what others think of Viet Hoavan Riethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17838716268511223008noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1653453919925155264.post-40550659473275466872007-05-12T18:36:00.000-07:002007-05-13T18:48:24.544-07:00Slow Food Perth<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CnrvgqGieZc/Rke-nf21aVI/AAAAAAAAAAs/FLwJnuS1trs/s400/PICT0239.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064225891777079634" />

www.slowfoodperth.org.au
Pictured below
Kervella Goats Cheese

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CnrvgqGieZc/RkZuXP21aTI/AAAAAAAAAAc/qha5ixsIa3M/s400/PICT0266.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063856176697272626" />van Riethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17838716268511223008noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1653453919925155264.post-53214101530751266832007-05-12T00:20:00.000-07:002007-05-12T00:22:54.814-07:00More Tea at the Dragon!Another great session at the Dragon Tea House (after Yum Cha of course), with a private demonstration by Stanley who sat us down and poured some delicious brews of Tie Guan Yin which is very popular in Fujian. It has a gorgeous lingering tannic finish.

We also tried Osmanthus Oolong which is a flavoured green oolong. This is also available in its pure form, without the floral flavouring.

Lady Lan - a Ginseng Oolong was interesting with a licorice finish. Not my favourite, but might attract the sweet tooths out there looking for a ginseng pick-me-up.

Tea making implements were discussed and purchased including an ingenious device called a

Piao i Teapot

The conventional Zi Sha Tea Pot is pictured below. It's small and used for each of up to 7 or so infusions of each batch of tea, depending on the type of tea used.

Pouring away the first infusion removes much of the dust that forms in transit. The second infusion is the one you drink.

Many thanks to Stanley for his patient and friendly advice about the ways of pouring.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CnrvgqGieZc/RkVkBP21aSI/AAAAAAAAAAU/uLhpXJ3iSI0/s400/Guanzhou+Tea.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063563328647162146" />van Riethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17838716268511223008noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1653453919925155264.post-61846298611466051872007-05-05T02:53:00.000-07:002007-05-12T00:06:16.960-07:00Dragon Tea HousePicture by Kees Boersma

Tea at the Dragon Tea House, 369 William Street Northbridge was a delightful experience and only a couple of steps from our favourite Vietnamese restaurant, Viet Hoa. Sandy and Jun were incredibly friendly and helpful. The scented floral teas excited our senses and the modest display of authentic Chinese tea sets reminded us of our visit to China last year.

Sandy and Jun have offered to show us how to use the tea set we brought back with us, and to sample some of their more exotic and recommended brews, with information about correct brewing temperatures according to the type of tea used. We chose Marigold tea (pictured) for our visit.

This delightful little gem is recommended for an authentic Chinese tea experience. A great place to meet with friends or to read the paper.

Dragon Tea Housevan Riethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17838716268511223008noreply@blogger.com0
